If all TV advertising for cleaning products were to be believed, doing our household chores would be a breeze. The truth is that if it sounds too good to be true it is probably not. Take a look at the following cleaning products that don’t do what it says on the tin!
Stainless Steel Cleaning Mousse
After shaking the can and applying the mousse onto the surface to be cleaned the most noticeable thing is the awful smell. The foam quickly evaporates and you really need to re-apply it several times to get the job done. You must remember to rinse off very well particularly on surfaces that come into contact with food.
In Wash Stain Remover
For the daily stains, you are advised to put 100ml of solution into the drum or drawer. Without soaking the stains pre-wash they really don’t come out! Perhaps the gold option instead of the standard works better.
Oven Soak
In theory, this is a wonderful idea but in practice it’s not so! The kit comprises of a huge plastic bag, solution, gloves and a whole host of health and safety instructions. You need the gloves to protect yourself from the solution as it can burn and you must try not to inhale the fumes. Grids and racks are placed in the bag and the solution added. The problem arises in that if you don’t coat the entire surface the end results are patchy and incomplete.
Air Freshener
For a room spray odor destroyer, this fresh air spray leaves a sweet sickly smell that’s worse than the original! When sprayed the particles are really visible and you need to avoid spraying around mirrors as it clings to the glass surface. And also, it doesn’t work well with pet odors.
Foam Sink Unblocker
This cheap method of unblocking the pipes appears to work well as it foams around the plug hole. Unfortunately, a 15-minute soak followed by running gallons of hot water to clear doesn’t actually remove any blockages. Left overnight a slight improvement is noticed bit opting for the liquid alternative is a much more reliable way to go.
Mold & Mildew Remover
Spraying this onto painted surfaces isn’t recommended as it soaks and stains. Grout cleaning is fairly acceptable but you need to rub really hard to get the results you want. This can cause the grout to peel away. It’s ok for small areas of mold but overall not an ideal product.
Stain Remover Pre-Wash
This specially formulated solution is designed to remove stains and grime that detergents leave behind. It really only works if you leave it overnight to soak. You need to apply and scrub vigorously to loosen tough stains. Whites don’t return to white when they’re gray! Choose the gold option rather than the standard for the best results, even though it’s much more expensive.
Window Cleaner
Sadly the saying “you get what you pay for” is often true. Cheap window cleaners that leave smudges and smears don’t really fill you with confidence. Try and buy the best quality product you can afford to get the job done to your satisfaction.
Toilet Rim Block
These are quite fiddly to fit over the side of the toilet bowl. Each time you put the seat down you need to re-position them. The fragrance and the cleansing solution are quite pleasant to begin with but the white plastic casing soon becomes discolored and need cleaning too! The stick on block cleaners is a much better proposition.
Troubleshooter Carpet Cleaner
You need to be careful when spraying directly onto fabrics as you can easily soak the carpet making it too wet to deal properly with. Use a damp cloth to massage into the stain and blot the excess with a clean cloth or paper towel. It’s supposed to neutralize odor and prevent re-soiling but that’s a matter of opinion!
